Co to jest Flap? 

 

Ponieważ trudno jest mi się wmiksować na jakąkolwiek półkę, postanowiłem tę półkę wymyśleć.

W samochodzie, jadąc kiedyś na koncert z Dawidem Milsem (raper z Brooklynu), wymyśliłem termin Flap. Miało to być skojarzenie onomatopeiczne, coś między Trip hopem a junglem. Miles to od razu podchwycił mówiąc, że „flap” znaczy „trzepotać”. Spodobało mi się, bo jest to bliskie mojej naturze: trzepotać, wibrować. 

 

Po pewnym czasie stwierdziłem, że nie ma sensu ograniczać tego terminu do muzyki. Postanowiłem stworzyć z tego uniwersum: Flap Style to znaczy Obecność. Idąc za ciosem Flap People to Ludzie Obecni. Obecność nosi w sobie oczywiście znamiona samopoznania. Po pewnym czasie zaistniał Festiwal Flap People, który został zorganizowany przy pomocy klubu Prokadencja z Łodzi. Notabene festiwal ten zainaugurował jego działalność, fantastyczną zresztą. Sztuka, jaka zaistniała na tym festiwalu była charakterystyczna dla czasów, w których żyjemy i wytyczyła bardzo obecny nurt dla całej działalności Prokadencji. Podobnie zorganizowałem Festiwal HASARAPASA w Zagnańsku. Tak jak w Łodzi w Prokadencji była to działalność o charakterze miejskim, tak w Zagnańsku na festiwalu HASARAPASA Flap Style Obecność chodziło o charakter ludyczny, wiejski, czyli formę festynu wiejskiego na dzień dzisiejszy. 

 

Ponieważ trudno określić, co to jest flap music w gatunkach kulturowo tak skrajnych, postanowiłem zawęzić terminologie w muzyce: muzyka flap jest to muzyka łącząca barwy naturalne i wirtualne. Natomiast cały nurt kulturowy Flap dotyczy transformacji sztuki i jej ciągłych zmian.

Flap - What is it?

 

It might seem that those for whom English is a mother tongue need no explanation, while those who only learned English and don't know this word can take a dictionary and check its meaning. Anyway, both don't know what flap means for me. I'm neither a native English speaker nor I learned this language at school – I can say only some basic phrases. I found this word a few years ago going to a concert together with David Mils, a rapper from Brooklyn. I found it somewhere between trip-hop and jungle.

I liked the sound of this word very much. I won't write here about phonetic or any other associations with Polish words because I know you don't know Polish so such explanations will have no sense. I can say that having in my mind all these criss-crossing interlinguistic intercultural relations I found flap to be a very good name for a state of being at the same time absolutely relaxed and absolutely concentrated, a state I do appreciate and enjoy so much. David Mils who knows both me and my music and the meaning of this word said I had hit the target. He somehow succeeded to explain to me what this word meant and I agreed with his opinion. 

 

For many years I have been looking for a right place for myself and my music or they have been trying to find a right shelf where me and my music could be put and labelled – all in vain; finally I've done such a shelf myself and labelled it FLAP MUSIC. Soon I came to the conclusion this term didn't have to be limited to music only. I decided to make it a universal one. Thus Flap Style means for me Presence (Readiness). Flap People are People Who Are Present (Who Are Ready). To–be–present (to–be–ready) has of course a lot to do with knowing–of–the–self. Then The Flap People Festival was organised in Łódź – it inaugurated the Procadence Movement in this town (a superb movement, indeed!). The art presented in the Procadence Club was characteristic for our times – was really present! – and it somehow determined the further activity of Procadence. Łódź is a big town and Procadence movement is an urban phenomenon. A year later I organised in Zagnańsk (a small village where I live now) the HASA RAPASA Flap Style Festival. Hasa Rapasa is a phrase taken from a very old spell, maybe even of shamanistic origin. So, although the festival was a kind of folk fiesta it strongly referred to the present times and didn't try to reconstruct the past.

 

Because it is difficult to define flap music within the kinds of music so extreme culturally I have found another solution: it is the music combining natural and virtual tones. While flap culture can refer to the constant transformations of art.
